Title: “Shades Of Evening Weymouth Harbour”

Judge’s Comments: An exceptional traditional watercolour. The transparent washes carefully overlaid to create luminous atmospheric study reminiscent of the romantic JMW Turner.

Its restrained tonality and sophisticated composition results in a work showing complete control of the medium, where forms subtly dissolve and appear while not over-stating the subject.

Shades of Evening

Tides of light now falling

where brightest sunshine lay,

seasons’ colours falter

gather where they may;

Reflected craft’s portraits

mired here by the flow,

ribboned shafts of sunlight

stretch to join the show.

Languid alterations arrive

in day’s failing light,

hills and sentinel buildings

try to stave the night;

As day droops to a harbour

it’s hues may brush on stone,

craft asleep at anchor

blush to be at home.

Call the shades of evening

celebrate the skies,

where dying of the day

suffers evening’s cries!
